Faithful vs. Belief

2 09 2009

If faithful = belief, then what does the Bible say of someone who is unfaithful?

How can you be a believer if you’re not following Christ? Someone who is not faithful to Christ must obviously not be a believer in Christ. Right? Not only should you believe Christ, you should live like you do. In Titus 1:6 Paul states the qualifications of a pastor are to have faithful children (if they have children, if they’re married). These children not only believe in Christ, they show it out in their life; they are not rebellious young men and women.

Belief and faithfulness go hand in hand in the Bible. Someone who is faithful is faithful to their belief in Jesus as Messiah. So, you can’t be faithful without having belief. What would you be faithful to? There’s nothing.

And again, you can’t be a believer without faithfulness. Right?? I think of Mel Gibson in “Signs” as a pastor who loses his faith after his wife’s death. Kind of tough. But Christ isn’t much if I only believe Him on occassion. Christianity calls us to a much more enduring lifestyle. There isn’t much compromise on that. If you have belief, you must prove yourself faithful to that belief or else it’s in vain.

Holding out for perfection

People didn’t used to expect the perfect job,

the perfect partner, the perfect life.

People were hoping for a good-enough life.”
